Jami Bennett, EH&S Specialist with IU, recently arranged for the IU student ASSE section of the Central Indiana Chapter to observe the Bloomington Fire Department do Confined Space Rescue Training. The students that attended went through the 5 page confined space permit that the Bloomington Indiana Fire Department utilizes. Captain Nick Teeter showed them the equipment used and explained to them the processes involved. The students even got to learn how to use the rope system by actually doing it themselves (under the supervision of the rescue team of course). This helped them get a better understanding of the confined space issues facing the fire services.

After nominations and much consideration the following individuals have been selected as the 07-08 ASSE officers.
As the fall term is rapidly approaching I trust that you are enjoying the rest of the summer off. IUB ASSE anticipates a very active year for student members and officers. I would like to address a few items to facilitate an orderly transition for our new officers.
First, I've provided a brief summary of agenda items which will be delegated and discussed among officers and student members. This list is only a draft and additional ideas for activities are welcome from safety students, current officers, IU faculty and additional parties.
Secondly, traditionally, meetings have been held once a month at a designated room in HPER. Subcommittee groups may meet to plan or discuss activities during the semester on an as needed basis.
First, we should schedule an officers meeting the first week to set and discuss the agenda for the fall and spring semesters. As ASSE officers you will undoubtedly grow personally and professionally during you tenure and find this experience to be very rewarding.
On behalf of the Department of Applied Health Science I would like to thank you for accepting your nomination and I look forward to working with you in the near future.
IUB through the department of applied health science offers both undergraduate Safety Science and graduate degrees in Safety Management. In the near future IUB plans to offer M.S. courses in Safety Management online.
