Job Description: Create a process of tracking and following up on departmental safety inspections. Assist in training other departments in LOTO procedures. Create an electronic format of the JSA’s that are written. Assist and support the safety group as needed for small projects.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must. Must be able to work in an industrial setting while wearing minimal personal protective equipment. This intern will work with our Environmental Health and Safety Department to complete ongoing projects. The successful candidate will be at least a sophomore going into junior year at an accredited college or university. Must have strong computer skills. Purpose: To review production processes and assist the Industrial Hygienist in performing Industrial Hygiene (IH) assessments, respirator training, input of assessment survey results into database and development of Industrial Hygiene program documents. Assist in overall program management of Crane Army Ammunition Activity’s (CAAA) Industrial Hygiene Program.
Background: The Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA) is a government-owned, government-operated production/storage facility located in south central Indiana. The CAAA, a tenant of Naval Support Activity, Crane (NSA Crane), manages munitions throughout their entire life cycle. Our Manufacturing & Engineering Directorate designs, modifies, produces, renovates, and demilitarizes munitions, and our Depot Operations Directorate stores, ships, and inspects munitions.
Scope of Work: Learn how to conduct respirator training and fit testing and be available for use by the Industrial Hygienist to conduct training and fit testing of CAAA employees. Assist the Industrial Hygienist with routine Industrial Hygiene surveys. Provide assistance to the CAAA Industrial Hygienist in inputting IH data into the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS). Assist the Industrial Hygienist in the development of IH program guidance and regulatory requirements.
Assignment One: Learn how to conduct respirator training and fit testing and be available for use by the Industrial Hygienist to conduct training and fit testing of CAAA employees. (30% of effort).

Assignment Three: After week three provide assistance to the CAAA Industrial Hygienist in inputting IH data into the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS). (20% of effort).

Deliverables
Assignment One: Complete fit testing and respirator training by week three and every two weeks after this (weeks 5, 7, 9, 11 and 14) provide the safety supervisor with a status of number of CAAA employees trained and fit tested.
Assignment Two: At the end of week 5 be completed with subtask and ready to start assisting the Industrial Hygienist with conducting actual Industrial Hygiene surveys. At the end of week 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 inform the safety supervisor of all Industrial hygiene surveys completed.
Assignment Three: By the end of week 6 provide the safety supervisor a status of progress towards learning how to input data and actual work completed for the CAAA IH. Provide updates at end of weeks 9, 11, 13 and 15.
Assignment Four: By the end of week 9 provide the safety supervisor a status of progress towards the review of existing program documents and regulatory requirements and status of actual work completed for the CAAA IH. Provide updates at end of weeks 9, 11, 13 and 15.
Student Background Requirements: The intern should be pursuing a degree in a safety discipline (Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene or Safety Engineering), or in a scientific field of study (i.e., Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Engineering). Education requirements for the GS-4 level include successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. The student must be able to operate a Windows-based computer and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word or similar word processing software. The student must have a valid driver’s license. The student must be able to perform extended walking, bending, carrying equipment, working on uneven surfaces, working alone, and driving an automobile. Preference is a third year student with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Will also be required to provide support in the areas of disability management, on-site medical clinic, and implementation of GE-required compliance tools and other projects as necessary. This program provides scholarships to individuals pursuing a course of study that will lead to a career in industrial health and safety occupations, including mine safety. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 26, 2010.
To be eligible for an Erma Byrd Scholarship, individuals must meet the following criteria:
Eligible fields of study for this program are mining and mineral engineering, industrial engineering, occupational safety and health technology/technician, quality control technology/technician, industrial safety technology/technician, hazardous materials information systems technology/technician, mining technology/technician, and occupational health and industrial hygiene.
This program has a service obligation component, requiring recipients of the scholarship to be employed in a career position directly related to industrial health and safety for one year upon completion of their degree program. Scholarship recipients must begin such employment no more than six months after degree completion.

The National Safety Council’s (NSC) Construction Division will offer Graduate and Undergraduate (junior or senior year) students pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety & Health (focusing in the Construction industry) to submit an application to participate in the Construction Division Student Ambassador Award Program for the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo in Orlando, Florida, October 25-28. If chosen, the award would be used to assist in defraying the costs of attending.
